Does Acupuncture boost fertility? Know more

Acupuncture is based on a 3000-year-old system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In this process, fine needles are inserted at points around your body to correct imbalances in energy which are said to flow around your body. Acupuncturists believe that there are 500 different points around the body that can be stimulated to get the energy flowing.

Acupuncture and Fertility

The aim of acupuncturists is to rebalance the energy flow and prepare your body for fertility. According to British Acupuncture Council, acupuncture helps boost female fertility by doing three things:

  • Regulate hormone function
  • Increasing blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, and helps relax your muscles which can improve the chances of an embryo implanting.
  • Tackling the causes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – a common cause of infertility
  • Helps relieve stress and makes you feel more relaxed

Acupuncture and Modern Medicine

Most doctors are skeptical about the use of acupuncture to enhance fertility, due to lack of scientific evidence. However, some believe that it can help by stimulating nerve and muscle tissues, and by helping you relax and de-stress – which may boost fertility. Some research has also suggested that conception rates improved during IVF when acupuncture was performed on the same day as embryos were implanted in the uterus.

Certain IVF clinics may have acupuncturists working with them, or they may even refer you to a local practitioner to increase your chances. It is a harmless procedure and acupuncture to increase fertility is worth a shot when you’re trying to increase your chances of conception.

Acupuncture and Male Sperm

According to British Acupuncture Council, there is evidence to show that acupuncture can help increase sperm motility, as well as increase the levels of male sex hormone testosterone, lowering the temperature of the scrotum (where sperms are stored), and creating a better environment for keeping the sperms healthy.

Acupuncturists usually take your full medical history into consideration, ask for details such as your menstrual cycle and results of your fertility tests. They give you advice on diet and lifestyle changes that go with the needle treatment, in order to boost your fertility.

If you’re considering to try acupuncture, speak to your gynecologist about it. Depending on your age and health, your doctor might recommend something more proactive to your fertility. They will also help you weigh your options, ask you to get blood work done and then try acupuncture to address your specific needs. However, if you have health conditions such as endometriosis, acupuncture may not work.
