Beauty Do’s and Don’ts during Pregnancy

During pregnancy, you do everything possible to make sure your fetus is safe and healthy. You also want to look your best and be comfortable. If you’re wondering about how safe beauty treatments are during pregnancy, here’s what you should know:

  1. Manicures & Pedicures

The smell of nail polish can sometimes cause pregnant women to feel nauseous. This does not mean you should completely avoid manicure and pedicures. Also, the brief exposure to the products in the salon will not harm mother or the baby. However, mothers should avoid brands that use chemicals like dibutyl phthalate and go for natural alternatives.

  1. Facials

Facials are a great way to pamper your skin, especially during pregnancy when your hormone levels change. However, not all treatments are safe for moms-to-be. Aromatherapy, chemical peels, hot stones, and electric stimulations are of the treatments that you should avoid until your baby is born.

  1. Hair Color

This is the most common worry for pregnant women who like to color their hair. Experts suggest that chemicals found in semi-permanent and permanent dyes are not highly toxic and are safe to use during pregnancy. The small amount of dye that would be absorbed by the skin doesn’t reach the baby. However, doctors recommend waiting until second or third trimester to dye your hair.

  1. Massage

Massage during pregnancy may help reduce anxiety and depression, apart from relieving muscle and joint pains. Look for places that offer prenatal massages and ensure that they are certified to work with pregnant women. Certain hospitals offer the same so finding one might be a good option.

  1. Teeth Whitening Procedures

During pregnancy, getting your teeth whitened professionally or by using over-the-counter products are not recommended. If you want a brighter smile, talk to your doctor about natural solutions like using a baking soda and strawberry paste.

  1. Steam and Saunas

Avoid steam rooms and saunas during your pregnancy, because like tanning and getting body wraps, saunas can cause hyperthermia (abnormally high body temperature), which can lead to an increased risk of birth defects during the first trimester.

  1. Tattoos and Piercing

Very little is known about the effects of chemicals in the tattoo dye during pregnancy. The main concern of getting a tattoo is the risk of contracting infections such as hepatitis B and HIV. If you want to get any piercing or tattoos done, it is better to wait until your baby is born.

  1. Waxing

Waxing is a fairly regular routine for many women. Your skin might become more sensitive during pregnancy, however, getting a wax is considered to be safe. Hormones may cause your hair to grow at a faster rate. Therefore, it might be a good idea to go for waxing to remove hair.
