Research Experience

Thesis (MSc)-University of Leeds, U.K

I have submitted my thesis entitled “Cellular and Molecular markers of Oocyte quality for the degree of MSc in Embryology.

The aim of the study was to determine whether any significant differences in the amino acid turnover exist between developmentally competent and arrested oocytes on in vitro maturation (IVM) over a period of 24 hours. A further aim was to determine whether any significant differences exist between oocytes obtained from PCOS and non-PCOS patients.

Immature oocytes which had not reached metaphase 2 (MII) at the time of ICSI were used in the research. A total of 60 oocytes were analyzed, 20 from PCOS and 40 from non-PCOS patients. Oocytes, which progressed in vitro to MII, exhibited amino acid patterns different from those, which arrested. Oocytes from PCOS patients showed a different amino acid turnover as opposed to non-PCOS patients. The data suggested a link between amino acid metabolism and oocyte quality.

Thesis (M.D)-University of Kerala, India

During my post-graduate training in India at Trivandrum Medical College from September 1992 to August 1995, I submitted a Thesis entitled “‘The Effect of Intracervical PGE2 Gel on Cervical Ripening and its Effect on Labour” for the Degree of Master of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (MD).

She has also been involved in the following Research projects in the Reproductive Medicine unit in Leeds.

  1. Birth weight study – This is an observational study to investigate whether the birth weight of women affects their response to stimulation during IVF treatment.
  1. A phase 2 randomised trial to investigate the dose-response relationship of a single injection of long-acting FSH to initiate multiple follicular growths in IVF cycles.
  1. A prospective randomised study comparing Nourish (preconception conditioning programme) with placebo in couples undergoing IVF treatment
  1. RCT of Menopur versus Gonal-F in the management of anovulatory infertility.
  1. A prospective randomised study of the optimal timing for the administration of HCG in women undergoing IVF in a GnRH antagonist cycle.
